SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
WHAT WE WANT:

All submissions must be by email, whether in the body of the email or as an
attachment. Send all submissions to editor@mountainechoes.com. All literary
submission attachments (stories, poems, recipes, memories, essays, etc.) must be
in Microsoft Word, Corel WordPerfect, or plain ASCII (.txt) text format.

Because mountainechoes.com is brand new, we are unable to pay authors and
artists for their work. On the other hand, you do not pay us anything at all, and we
offer the magazine free as a service to everyone. We hope our efforts will be
supported by advertisers who care about the arts. We can offer you one thing that
many others won't: reader/viewer feedback. Additionally, if your work is accepted
for publication, you will also have the satisfaction of being published online for all to
see.

Although we are primarily focused on Appalachian culture, we will be glad to review
any appropriate submissions for publication. Previously published work may be
submitted for publication: if you hold the copyright to the work and the other legal
conditions below are met, you may submit it but must provide us with where it was
previously published.

Fiction: short stories of any genre (no explicit sex, violence, or offensive language)
up to 5,000 words.

Non-fiction and Creative Non-Fiction: literary/personal essays, opinion, general
interest, inspirational, humor, articles on anything you feel would interest our
Appalachian audience (gardening, health issues, hobbies, etc.), and memoirs up to
5,000 words.

Poetry: All forms considered, but free verse preferred. Poems must contain fewer
than 50 lines (we do make exceptions, however). All poems must have titles. You
may submit up to five (5) poems at a time. Please include a line count in your
email.

Recipes: include list of ingredients and step by step instructions. Also include a bit
of information about the cook. Photographs also accepted. You may submit up to
five (5) recipes at a time.

Memories: Up to 1000 words about your loved one. Be sure to include loved one's
name as well as your own. For photograph submissions, see photography. Note, we
cannot publish an obituary that has been previously published in a newspaper or
anywhere else. Write something new for us!

Art: Send your artwork in the form of a graphics file, preferably of .jpg, .gif, or .bmp
format extension as an attachment to your email. No files will be accepted which
are larger than 400k. You may use your graphics or scanning software to adjust
your file size. There are many places on the web which can tell you how to do that.
We may also adjust your file size and format at our discretion. If you have an
original idea of a non-traditional genre, such as, for example, an appropriate comic
strip idea, contact us before submission.

Photography: Send your photographs in the form of a graphics file, preferably of
.jpg, .gif, or .bmp format extension as an attachment to your email. No files will be
accepted which are larger than 400k. You may use your graphics or scanning
software to adjust your file size. There are many places on the web which can tell
you how to do that. We may also adjust your file size and format at our discretion.
If you have an original idea that doesn't fit into the mold, such as, for example, an
appropriate collage of photos, contact us before submission.

Young People's section: For Children and By Children. Follow guidelines for type of
submission, but make sure the word "children" is in the subject box of email
submission.

For submissions for the Kitchen Table Stories and Porch Swing Muse sections, make
sure you enter the category in the subject line of your email.

If you have something you feel is appropriate but doesn't conform to any of the
above categories, feel free to submit it.

LEGAL INFORMATION:

You always retain all copyrights to your submissions, even if mountainechoes.com
accepts it for publication.

By sending anything whatsoever for publication, you are:

1. certifying to us that it is your own original work;

2. certifying to us that you are the sole copyright holder of the work - no one else
has any legal claims to it;

3. certifying to us that it has never been published anywhere (if you do not provide
the information stated above as to where it was published, etc.);

4. granting to mountainechoes.com the legal right and license to publish the work
on the internet's world wide web and cd archives (and no where else) for perpetuity
(should we decide to publish it);

5. stating your understanding and agreement that mountainechoes.com is the sole
arbiter of the content of our magazine and how long any particular content remains
on the site. The only exception to this is your right to withdraw your work from
publication upon thirty days written notice to us, which request we will always be
happy to comply with;

6. stating your understanding and agreement that you do not expect and will never
receive any compensation whatsoever for your submission;

7. stating your understanding and agreement that mountainechoes.com may edit
your work prior to publishing it as mountainechoes.com feels appropriate (hey,
folks, find an editor that doesn't edit and . . . well, we don't know what you've
found!).
